SEND and autism-friendly maths tutor
in Apperley Bridge, Calverley, Rawdon,

and surrounding areas

Do you need a maths tutor for your neurodivergent child or child with SEND?

✦ I'm a qualified teacher with 15+ years experience of tuition and school intervention.
✦ I can be your maths "fairy godmother"!
✦ I’ll fly in and ease your worries. They're going to be okay!
✦ Neurodivergence and SEND aren't things to be fixed - they just need a more personalised approach, and the right tutor.
✦ Parents and teachers have called me a magic child whisperer, but it's not magic - it's years of experience, strategy and...well...just getting it.

Attending school? I have slots outside of school hours that book up quickly.

Home-educated or currently not in school? I tutor during the day too!

Whether you’d like a home visit or online tutoring, I can create and deliver a suitable, bespoke programme of study.

Praise for Parallel Lines Education from a parent of an autistic student with low school attendance highlighting patience, flexibility and support.

Your child is unique so their tuition will be too. You and your child can tell me what helps and what doesn't, then together we create the best experience.

How is tuition adapted for an autistic child?

  • Introductory personalised video to say hello so your child knows what to expect from a home visit or online session.

  • A predictable structure every time. No surprises.

  • No small talk. Straight in with “what’s the best crisp flavour?” or “What colour is Thursday?”

  • Sensory needs considered - e.g. no perfume, whatever position or seating arrangement is comfortable, your child can wear their pyjamas without showering for days - I won't bat an eyelid.

  • No eye contact, no problem (eye contact is weird).

  • PDA profile? Declarative language and low demand environment all the way. Your child has autonomy and I guide them.

  • Sessions can be based on what grabs your child's interest with the maths they need to learn sneakily embedded.

  • Rejection sensitivity handled - we work together so there's no shame or pressure to get things right.

  • No need to turn camera on for online sessions.

  • The aim is for your child to feel totally at ease and just be themselves.

What about selective or situational mutism?

  • Not sure if they'll talk to me? You're not the first parent to say that. But you'd be amazed.

  • We get there through patience, humour and taking each day as it comes.

  • We can communicate through writing, pictures, games and pets on days when talking is hard.

  • I can talk and your child can write or type. I’ve done it - it works!

How are ADHD students catered for?

  • Pictures, diagrams, bullet points, tick lists.

  • Music on if it helps.

  • Bespoke strategies to make revision easy to start and easy to keep up.

  • Tasks broken down into chunks.

  • Written visual instructions.

  • Scaffolded support on how to approach multi-step problems.

  • Mini-whiteboards are life.

  • Activity breaks, opportunities to move (maths Jenga anyone?)

Dyscalculia tutoring using physical apparatus, counters and base ten blocks to support students in maths tutored by Emma Stubbs at Parallel Lines Education

What support is there for students with dyscalculia?

  • I'll spot the signs if you're not sure.

  • My bag weighs a ton - it's filled with hands on manipulatives - counters, multi-link cubes, place value blocks, games and activities.

  • Physical apparatus to make sense of shape and number.

  • Visual diagrams galore.

  • Colour coding.

  • Pre-drawn number lines, graph axes, place value columns, times table grids, etc.

  • Calculator allowed so brain space isn't taken up with mental maths.

  • Advice on how your child can transfer strategies to school.

Positive feedback from a parent of a child with maths anxiety, tutored by Emma Stubbs at Parallel Lines Education

Can maths anxiety be overcome?

  • If your child says they hate maths, can't do maths, or that they panic in an exam, I can turn that around.

  • Confidence is 95% of the battle - I'll give them constant opportunities to succeed.

  • We start with what they can do and build.

  • We find the point where it got confusing and make sense of it together.

  • Scaffolded support that reduces until they are flying independently.

  • I’ll never make your child feel stupid because they're not.

  • A fresh new positive experience of maths awaits!
